Short & sweet: Overall Equipment Effectiveness

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is the measure of the added value of a system.

It is the product of availability, performance and quality and is a key figure in a range between 0 and 1 or 0 % and 100 %:

OEE = availability x performance x quality

The three factors involved are calculated as follows:

Availability = Runtime
Running time + downtime
Performance = Actual performance (in pieces or tons or liters / hour)
Target performance
Quality = produced parts – reworked parts – scrap parts
produced parts

Our tip:

The value below which the OEE of your system should not fall depends on your industry and the type of manufacturing process!
For highly complex processes, an OEE of 60 % is already a good value, while 90 % can be the lower limit for fully continuous production, for example.
