Short and sweet: SMED – Single Minute Exchange of Dies

Single Minute Exchange of Dies is a lean production buzzword and stands for the systematic reduction of set-up times. Whereas set-up times used to be reduced in order to gain production capacity, today the focus is on logistical goals: reduced work in progress, shorter throughput times and increased flexibility. The basic procedure for reducing set-up times is to structure the necessary set-up operations in this way,

  • that set-up processes that can be performed in parallel with production are carried out before the machine stops, and
  • that set-up work steps are shortened as much as possible during a machine standstill.

Our tip:

In many cases, a significant reduction in set-up times can be achieved through purely organizational measures.
