Sometimes special events help to recognize how important professional supply chain management is. Industry and trade have had to experience this time and again during the months of the coronavirus pandemic and have coped with it to some extent. The EU Commission and the German government are currently providing a particularly drastic example of poor supply chain management, although there is much to suggest that the situation is no better in most other European countries.

Companies often have several thousand or tens of thousands of articles to plan. Depending on the ERP system, there are 20 – 100 MRP parameters per article that have to be set and regularly checked for correctness and consistency. Doing this manually is a Sisyphean task. Nevertheless, the parameters have to be set in order to keep the delivery readiness high and not let the inventories explode. What is the best way to do this and, above all, to do it sustainably?

The lead time is generally understood to be the time required to prepare an action. In transportation planning, this includes, for example, the time required to prepare the transport. In procurement and production planning, the period of time until the order or production order is triggered. Just like the goods receipt processing time or a safety time, the lead time extends the time it takes to replenish a product. It therefore has a stock-increasing effect on materials in stock.

The great spring weather of the past few days has reminded me of a beautiful Dutch saying: “You should fix the roof when the sun is shining”. When I first heard this expression as a teenager, it didn’t even really stick with me. It made perfect sense to me that work on the roof structure should be tackled when the weather was good. Who tackles such important things as repairing a roof when it’s pouring with rain?

We are living in a time of upheaval, which has once again gained drastic momentum due to the Corona pandemic. In recent years, we have systematically worked on the strategic orientation of our group of companies and accelerated this work once again in the lock down. More online and less travelling has given us the breathing space in the consulting business to reflect on the mission and vision of A&K and to drive change. In the process, this more modern interpretation of the A&K diamond emerged in the course of the continuing discussion.

In supply chain management, the term “distribution-free” methods typically refers to special forecasting and, above all, safety stock methods that enable reliable statements to be made even if the prerequisite of a normal distribution of demand for items does not exist.

International consultants and auditors dominate the German management market: Of the almost ten billion euros generated by the leading management consultancies in Germany in 2019, around 8.1 billion euros were generated by big names such as Accenture, the Boston Consulting Group and KPMG. This is according to the Lünendonk List 2020, which includes the top 15 German consultancies among the “leading” consultants.
